How to decide which small business conferences and events to invest your time in this year

The new-year brings a new selection of conferences and networking events, especially for small businesses. So it’s important to ask questions like which events should I invest my time and money into? Here are some guide questions & factors to help you make your decision.

  • Look at the lineup of speakers. Do they have a particular zone of genius you want to learn more about? Dig deep on their backgrounds. Did they build their businesses from the ground up? Did they experience the struggles most business owners experience? Or was their success down to something else? Do some research to ensure their experiences are relatable and real so that you know what you can really learn from them.

  • Take a closer look at the topics. Do you want to be able to apply what you learn to your own business, and if so, will you be able to do so soon after the event? Or are the topics a little out of touch and a-little-far-into-the-future or too many steps ahead of where you’re at? Another point to consider is – is there a topic that you haven’t explored yet, that’s so unique, or that you haven’t quite considered that angle before? Are you going to learn things that could change the development and direction of your business?

  • Explore the agenda. Is it all lectures? Is it interactive? Does it include opportunities to network? Check-in with yourself about which features you look for in a conference. Or which features you don’t necessarily get excited about, but absolutely need?

  • Learn about the organizers. Are they huge corporations looking for sales and leads? Or are they small business owners who want to support you and advocate for their fellow small business owners’ success?

If you’ve got the answers to these questions, then selecting appropriate events should be a no-brainer. Knowing exactly what you’re looking for will guarantee time and money well spent!
